Don’t Bite Off More Than You Can Chew

We have been trying out mattresses, the ones that get delivered to your door and you can try out for a few months then either keep or return. We have tried Cocoon, Helix and Purple. His favorite is the Cocoon and my favorite so far is the Purple, although I like the Cocoon a lot too. One thing we both agree on is that the Helix was not the one for us. That came as a major surprise because not only was it the most expensive one of the bunch but it was also the one that had been the most customized.

My husband would have been perfectly content keeping the first one we tried, but I like to know my options before making a decision, plus I also kind it fun to keep switching them out! Anyway, all that to say I decided to switch out my mattress yet again. After some research and comparing, I decided on Nectar! I did not think anything of it when I ordered it but the moment I saw that mattress waiting for me at our front door, I knew I was in trouble. It was HUGE!

And not only that but it was extremely heavy and had no handles!!! Like who designed this?! The first two we tried came in boxes and the third came in a tube similar to Nectars but ALL of them had handles. The packing slip said it was 120-150 pounds and it felt every bit of that. It would not have been such a big deal if we were on the first floor… but were not. We have a flight of stairs right as you walk through the front door. I managed to get it inside and up the first set of steps but could not make the bend and get it up the second.

I pulled, tugged, pushed and that thing just was not moving. I did not get frustrated but I did laugh at myself. I’ve never had to consider if I could carry something up the stairs on not. My husband has hauled countless things up, down and everywhere else for me without complaining and always making it look so easy. Boy did I miss him so much in that moment. Exhausted, I admitted defeat and just came to terms that this would just stay stuck on our stairs still he got back 😂

Somehow, hours later I got a second win. With a little muscle and a whole lot of will power, I managed to get it to the top of the stairs. I can not even describe the excitement, relief, pride and achievement I felt. I am thankful that I was able to make it work for this situation but boy have I learned my lesson for the future. The TV console I was planning on getting soon, may just have to wait haha.

Deployments are filled with a lot of ups and downs, struggles and problems, but sometimes you just need to celebrate the small victories, even if the problem was your fault to begin with 🙃

    1. Finding a good mattress that is a great fit for both is definitely a struggle!!! I love trying out the mattresses in a box that get delivered to your door because they usually have a 100-365 day trail period. AND they are so much cheaper than the ones in stores. If you haven’t tried one of the out, I definitely recommend it. Its lots of fun to try them out and theres no commitment! If at the end of the trail period, you don’t like it, they will pick of the mattress from your house for free and give you a full return. I did not believe it at first but 4 beds later and it really is true!

  8. I find this whole rolled mattress thing so strange. I haven’t had the opportunity to see one personally, I’m a very visual person. But good job on getting it in! I love stories proving someone’s independence.

    1. Haha it definitely is an interesting concept. We had a traditional spring mattress but when we upgraded to a king bed frame, it put us in the market for a new mattress. We went to several mattress stores to see what we like and discovered that we liked the memory foam mattress best butttt they were outrageously priced! Way outside of our price range. Even though its a weird idea, we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the mattresses in a box. They feel just like the super expensive ones but are a fraction of the price. If you ever are in the market for one, its worth a try. At least it has been for us! I think we just might keep the last one. Thank you for reading! I definitely proved that independence to myself and it was much needed.

    1. Thanks for reading! I really enjoyed the purple mattress! It was the most expensive one I tried but it was really great. They have promotions often where you can get a free pillow for sheets and stuff so watch out for that! After sleeping on the nectar for a few weeks now, I do have to say it is my favorite of them all. And it was a good amount cheaper. I am curious to see if my husband will like it too. Either way, I definitely recommend trying any of the mattresses in a box. Its a lot of fun and a great mattress seriously is priceless!

      1. Thank you for your response! I’ll definitely have to try a few out before we decide because you are right – a great mattress is priceless and important! The one we have right now is rough on both of us. (Especially with me being pregnant haha).

  14. That’s so funny! I remember when my Casper arrived and trying to maneuver it into the bedroom by myself haha. Thankfully I was on the first floor, but I can only how hilarious the sight would have been to a bystander. Glad you found yourself a keeper–you don’t know the importance of a good mattress until you experience it first-hand, right? 🙂

    1. Haha that is too funny!!! So glad I am not the only one to have done this. Those mattresses are no joke! They should come with a warning or something. Oh my goodness, a great mattress is such a life/sleep changer. I tell EVERYONE about them.
