I’m Only Half Crazy

Last week,  I ran my 4th half marathon. It’s been over 4 years since I ran my last. If you had asked me at the beginning of this year if I thought I would end up running a half, I would have told you no way. I still can not believe I did it.

The beginning of a race is always somewhat emotional for me. I’ve always teared up at the start line while waiting for the gun to go off. Its a mix of all kind of emotions. Excitement, pride and a little bit of fear. But I had to fight a lot harder this time to hold back the tears. I have always run races by myself. From 5k to full marathon. I’ve trained, run and finished alone. Never even had any friends or family waiting for me at the finish. It has never been on purpose but its just always happened that family and friends couldn’t be there. I did not think it was going to be a big deal but I missed him more than ever. I wished so hard to have him there. But at the same time, I was so proud of myself for having the courage to do this alone.

Of all of the races I have done, this race was by far the most challenging one. From 95 degree heat to the actual course itself. We were warned that the course would be difficult and include numerous hills, both steep and long and let me tell you, they weren’t lying.  Even on a flat course, a half is tough. But I choose this one because it made something hard even hard. Theres something so special and gratifying about pushing yourself further than you think you can go. This race broke me down. I wanted to quite countless times but I just kept putting one foot in front of the other and focusing on finishing the mile I was on.

Let me tell you, these challenges made crossing the finish line all the more rewarding. To date, this was the hardest but most satisfying half yet. We will see what else fitness/race wise this year brings. Hopefully my next race, I’ll get to have my husband there.

  1. Way to Go! Being a military wife or husband isn’t easy and there’s so much to deal with, especially if the hubby or wife is assigned to a unit that deploys a lot, but you get use to it and there’s a great family support on base, one that will become your 2nd family! Kuddos to you!

  2. What a wonderful thing. I know the feeling, I’ve run 4 complete marathons. Congratulations 🎈🎉🎊🍾 to you! But how on earth do you wear long yoga pants. I need my body to be free and exposed when I run.

    1. Wow! I have only done one full and decided to stick to half ever since. And great question! I usually run in cooler temperatures. Definitely was not prepared for the kind of heat that we had. Next time I will be in shorts, thats for sure!

You continue to challenge yourself to endure and keep striving. That is a truly amazing gift. Quiting is always the easy way out, which is why so many people choose to give up instead of fighting for their relationships. In the words of my First Sergeant, “Be willing to fight for what you value. If you give up, you never valued it in the first place.” Your husband is truly a blessed man to have you on his side. 🙂

    1. Yes! Most definitely. It was such a wonderful and fulfilling experience. I am so glad that I pushed myself to do it. Yes! Hopefully he will be. Maybe I can even talk him into running it with me. We’ll see about that though. Thank you! I certainly felt like one!!! 💪🏻

  4. Congratulations!! I think it is really cool that you worked towards this goal yourself, and saw it to the finish line (no pun intended) even without your husband there to cheer you on. He was proud of you from a distance, I’m sure. And to choose one that was harder than even a normal half is amazing. Great job!

This is beautiful! So inspiring! Doubt I can do 500 meters without gassing out and calling for an ambulance. Lmao. How long had you been training for this? Curious

    1. Oh thank you! It was a wonderful experience. I trained for about 12 weeks. Did two 5ks, a 10k then the half. I never ran further than 3 miles in training though. However, I did a lot of sprints, strength and core training.
