Trippin’ Over Boots

Everyday after work, my husband home comes and within steps of the front door has shed his boots, backpack, pants and shirt. Usually leaving them inconveniently in the walkway or in the freshly cleaned living room. I can not believe there was a time I would roll my eyes at this sight. I would release a heavy sigh as I picked up his socks, boots and work uniform and think to myself “I just cleaned up this room. Whyyyy does he have to put them here? Why can he not put them where they belong?” I just shake me head at my past self when I think back to that time. If only I knew…

Distance, deployments and time apart has forever changed my heart and perspective.  Today, my husband came home, kissed me on the forehead, then stood in the living room a took of his uniform like he has done countless times before… but today was different. There was not an ounce of irritation, discontent or annoyance. In fact, I couldn’t take my eyes off him as he rambled on about his day. My heart just overflowed with gratitude, love and thankfulness. As he went into the kitchen, I could not stop smiling as I looked at the pile of camo. In fact, it made me so happy, I had to capture the sight. The very same boots, backpack and uniform I use to grudgingly pick up, I now thank god for every time I trip over. As odd as it sounds, I am so grateful for dirt boots and smelly camo because it means he’s home. And I simply could not ask for anything more.

  2. This is wonderful! Coming home from deployment, any deployment, and having a wonderful “I’m home” moment. Thank you for sharing. Of course, we all should remember our home, our spouses who have been managing everything while we were away, and try to at least hit the laundry basket!

  3. good entry beaut life…I guess for your husband’s sake you do all things for him well especially ‘straightening out’ even if it’s inconvenient and sloppy…it took me years to stop throwing my dirty socks and shoes, etc., in the corner(s) of any room (for my wife to pick up ‘whenever’ I didn’t care), but I should have cared; after a long day in the military setting when I came home at night, my wife was patient with me, but after a while, she pointed to the prayer closet for me to release all those crazy things in my day to the God who knows all and sees all. Blessings to you and your guy! Ed.

  4. It’s funny what we realize what we took for granted without knowing we did. My son leaves Oct 10 th and let’s say he hasn’t been easy to live with I think he’s getting a bit anxious he’s ready to start his Basic Training away .. and I was saying that we will all need a break from his anxiousness . But now as each day passes I know I’m going to miss him and his ways .. his messy room his dirty dishes constantly because he’s on a certain diet . Well for eating right he’s not over weight by any means just being his healthy self but makes a mess (hahahaha)

      2. Is he Army? Because Missouri is where my husband went for basic! Oh I am glad you have received some letters but know its so hard to hear how he misses you. Its a HUGE adjustment!!! You go from seeing and talking to them everyday to pretty much no communication. You are a strong mom to let your son go and raise such a wonderful would wants to serve ❤️

  5. Amazing how it isn’t The Thing that upset you (his dirty pile of clothes) but how a voice in your head responded to The Thing. Same external scene; completely different internal experience. Great to read your experience of this. Thanks! (And glad he’s home)

  6. Are servicement allowed to wear uniform outside of the base in the US? I think in the UK it was all stopped about 30 years ago, during the troubles with Ireland – and they never let them go back to wearing them outside any more.

    1. Yes. We live off base. They are allowed to wear them several hours before their duty day starts till several house after it end. He usually comes straight home though, changes, then does whatever errands he needs to do. That is very interesting to here how military rules differ around the world.

  7. I soooooooo get this. I spent 12 years in the Royal Australian Navy, and returning home post deployment, stepping out of what ever uniform I had on at the time, in the middle of the lounge room was something cherished by both my wife and I. It in someway symbolised not just my return home, but also the Navy being placed way into the background of shared importance. My young children loved it too. So groover, I totally get this. N.

  8. Beautifully stated. Being married for 38 years there was a time I’d grumble about picking up after my husband, but as we get older, I’ve come to realize that I’m happy to have someone in my life that I CAN pick up after. Thanks for posting!
