Well, the title pretty much says it all.
I’ve had allergies all my life. I’m allergic to environmental things like pollen, mold, dust, and cedar. As well as cats, feathers, dogs and a few other random things.
I researched… okay googled, allergy treatments but I never truly looked into it. I am extremely grateful for the outstanding insurance we receive through the military. Wanting to take full advantage of it, I finally decided to look into all my options for allergies.
Well, it turns out I am allergic to 15 things! Definitely more than I was expecting, but it also explained a lot. Once I met with the doctor, I received some incredible news and some not so great.
The good was that they had a treatment plan for my allergies! And the incredible part was that by treating my allergies, it would also treat my asthma. To say it lightly, asthma has been a thorn in my side. I have managed to somewhat control it, but it has held me back more than I would like to admit.
The not so great is that treatment would start asap and we would have to put TTC on hold for awhile. I’ll start will shots several times a week. As I begin to tolerate higher levels, the treatments will space out to weekly, bi weekly and eventually monthly. Once I reach a “maintenance” level, we will be able to begin trying again. It just depends on the person and how many things they are allergic to but I am thinking it will take about a year for me to get there.
I was nervous to tell my husband all the news. I could’t predict what his reaction would be. When I finally did tell him, I’ll never forget his first question. “So your asthma could be cured?!” He helped me put it all into perspective to say the least. Although its disappointing to have to postpone trying for a bit, its not permanent. Pregnancy takes a lot! But the best thing I can do for me and our future children is make sure I am strong, healthy and prepared as possible.
So, unfortunately… but strangely fortunately we are pushing pause on TTC while we treat both my allergies and asthma.

You are right. Still having military insurance is a blessing. Getting well is the biggest priority. Good things will come!

As a kid I took shots twice a week for several years. No my immune system is in tune enough that I seldom even react to poison ivy.

Probably good to consider waiting, the shots themselves probably contain chemicals that could cross the placenta. Plus, pregnancy dramatically increases your allergies! I’m on our fourth baby right now, and it’s still amazing to me how bad they get when pregnant over the fall/winter months 😀. Hoping the shots get you to a better place in handling it!

Your husband loves you so much!!! You’re doing the right thing. You’ll be so glad one day that you made your health a priority. And your children will reap the benefits, as well. It’s an investment in the future, and the return on investment will be amazing memories! 😉
